“My life will always have dirty dishes.
If this sink can become a place of contemplation,
let me learn constancy here.”
– Gunilla Norris, Being Home
Since my last post, I’ve been thinking about other simple one-minute practices which help me feel better fast. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order:
- Round up a space: Fluff up the pillows, put the chairs in, gather empty cups and plates, close laptop, turn out the light.
- Put away the clean dishes from the night before. With awareness.
- Shake out the area rug in the kitchen, sweep the debris below it, place it down again.
- Sauté an onion.
- Hang out clothes to dry and enjoy the fresh, crisp smell when I take them down.
- Clear my purse.
- Light a stick of Nag Champa incense.
- Spritz the air with a spray bottle mixture of good water and a few drops of rose or lavender essential oil.
- Wash my hands imagining that I’m releasing the stringy stress of my day.
- Do nothing at all, with total awareness, for one minute.
That’s twenty practices if you include my last post. How about you? What helps you feel better fast?

i am behind on your blog …by months!! but just clicking through and feel compelled to speak …
my favorite feel better fast is to clean off the kitchen island … do the dishes, empty the sink, put away stray items, primp my happy items that sit near the sink, wash the counters , make it all sparkly and fresh …. then at least this one spot looks lovely for me … and it is a favorite spot, so i should take good care of it ….
Thank you for sharing what makes you feel better fast, Elizabeth. I love these simple practices too. I call it the “60-second round up” even though it takes me longer than a minute – by choice!
