One of my favorite out-of-the box thinkers and bloggers, Seth Godin, wrote this:

You Rock

This is deceptive.

You don’t rock all the time. No one does. No one is a rock star, superstar, world-changing artist all the time. In fact, it’s a self-defeating goal. You can’t do it.

No, but you might rock five minutes a day.

Five minutes to write a blog post that changes everything, or five minutes to deliver an act of generosity that changes someone. Five minutes to invent a great new feature, or five minutes to teach a groundbreaking skill in a way that no one ever thought of before. Five minutes to tell the truth (or hear the truth).

Five minutes a day you might do exceptional work, remarkable work, work that matters. Five minutes a day you might defeat the lizard brain long enough to stand up and make a difference.

And five minutes of rocking would be enough, because it would be five minutes more than just about anyone else.

–From Seth Godin’s Blog, by Seth Godin

The challenge:

  • What is one thing you can do today (right now) to “rock” for five minutes?
  • What is one thing you can do today to rock that is EASY and FUN?

If five minutes is too much to manage, try just ONE minute.

If you need a little extra nudge of inspiration, you might enjoy this beautiful (short) video I posted a while ago called “The Power of One.”

Feel free to share what you did today in the comment box below. I love hearing from you!

I started feeling puny because I couldn’t think of anything I could do that would really rock (by my definition). Mother Theresa stuff. So I just spent 5 minutes thinking of everything I could that I had done to make people smile in the last few days. I realized there were many times I had shown kindness to others and although it may seem minor or simple, it may have had an impact on another’s life. One never knows.

    5 minutes well spent!

You rock girl! I LOVE it! May your note inspire others who feel similarly at the beginning.

My husband rocks. He drafted a letter on my behalf that was brilliant. A work of art.

My daughter rocks. She just received a coveted job (rare for Freshman) as a tour guide at her college.

My five minutes today turned into 5 hours as I assembled and spiffed up some articles I’ve written. I’ve been invited to be a guest for a whole week on another blog site.

What have I done in the past few days to make someone smile or feel better? I listened to a friend telling me her problems, and another friend’s description of her job interview.

Here are some other ways to play with making a difference that I found in one of my earlier posts:

You can begin by dropping these phrases into your awareness, and watching what arises:

Why it is easy for me to make a difference…
How it is easy for me to make a difference…
One thing I can do in one minute that can make a difference…

    Have fun!
