Celebrating the Magic of “Two”

Dia de los Muertos

If you’re in Mexico or Mexican, November 2 is a good day to have a chat and a good laugh with someone on the other side. If you’re me, you’re doubly blessed.

It’s called Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). People gather to honor and celebrate family members who have died with huge elaborate altars. On this day it is believed that the veil between the physical world and the spiritual world is at its thinnest. I wrote about this wonderful Mexican tradition in a post last year entitled Joyful Remembering.

As it so happens, November 2 is also the day I was born. In Mexico. Whoever is responsible for orchestrating birth place and birth date must have had a very good sense of humor, or wanted to send me a message about my purpose in life, or both.

Perhaps it explains why I feel like I’m always straddling two worlds, living in two countries, restoring balance to polarized living spaces, embodying (by celebrating) the life and death sides of our human experience. To add to my dual theme party: the November number 11 adds up to 2, the day is a 2. Come on, already? Anyone out there care to weigh in?

All I know is that this day does feel doubly special to me.

There are no big party or plans for me this year other than to vote, and enjoy a nice meal out with my hubby (also a Vogt). A celebratory dinner for two.

Happy Día de los Muertos everyone!

Happy belated birthday Stephanie. Your posts have had a positive impact on my life! And I shared one of his favorite foods (candy orange slices) with my Dad, who passed to the other side three weeks ago. It was great timing for Dia de los Muertos for me this year.
