“I want to shed my waste with quiet reverence like the pine…Keep me mindful of what I take into my home, the items brought to substitute for real living… Help me slowly to surrender all excess.”
–Gunilla Norris, Being Home
Quick questions.
A simple yes or no will do.
- Is there something in your purse or wallet that doesn’t need to be there?
- Is there something in the backseat or trunk of your car that has been there longer than a week (that doesn’t need to be there)?
- Are you wearing something right now that you don’t love, doesn’t flatter you, or doesn’t fit perfectly (yes, including underwear)?
- Is there something in your closet that you haven’t worn in over a year?
- Is your sock drawer a jumble of pair-less orphans?
- Do you have stuff in the fridge or freezer that is over six months old?
- Is there food that hasn’t been put away?
- Are there dishes that need to be washed? Or put away?
- Is there something on the refrigerator door that is expired, aged beyond recognition, not even noticeable?
- Is there something on the floor that belongs on a surface or in a drawer?
- Do you have a plant that could use a little pruning, or watering?
- Are there lights on that are not being used?
- Do you have to dodge something to get past the entryway to your home?
- Are you feeling any twinges (even a hint) of overwhelm or anxiety as you scroll down this list?
- Are you feeling pissed at a family member, partner, or roommate for not doing their bit to keep things clear and tidy?
- Are your buttons getting pressed by these questions?
Thanks, that’s all.
But if it moves you to clean, clear, move, address, connect with, or breathe into … one thing, pile, issue, or toleration…
don’t let me stop you.
Your list successfully moved me to clear out some clothes that I haven’t been wearing and bring them to a local store run by the American Cancer Society. Yay!! I also brought some things that had been in the trunk of my car for far too long to the Goodwill Store. Thank you!
Fantastic, Janet! Feels great doesn’t it? Best therapy in town.
I am ever so grateful for being introduced to your work that is going to help me reach that inner space of stillness, peace and joy without spinning my wheels to make time to get there. I have been doing the work of decluttering at many levels for quite a while but feel it has not been happening fast enough. Giving myself permission to hang out with myself in my inner garden more often, moving one thing into its place and doing one minute clearing is most gratifying and productive. Thank you for your wisdom and guidance.
