How to Create an Altar of Letting Go

“There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.” –Rumi

[This post follows the previous “Altars Alter”]

Anytime the spirit moves you, you can create your own altar of remembering, enlightening, and letting go by following any of these simple steps below:

How to Make an Altar

  1. PLACE a colorful cloth, flowers, a candle, and any object that makes your heart sing.
  2. GATHER and add items that symbolize things, people, habits, beliefs, memories, or outcomes you wish to release (e.g. clothing, letters, food, photos of ex-husband or wife…)
  3. LIGHT a candle, close your eyes, and take a moment to connect in and get centered.
  4. CALL IN a Divine Presence, or a higher power, to hold a space for you and help anchor your intentions.
  5. EXPAND your energy field with your breath, and imagine it filling the room as you repeat this blessing silently or out loud: “May this _______________[thing, thought, aspect of myself, painful memory, relationship…] be fully released for the highest and best good of all concerned. And so it is. And so it shall be.”
  6. ALLOW yourself to feel all sensations or emotions that arise without fixing, managing, or judging them [note: this step is key].
  7. BREATHE.
  8. NOTICE in the days that follow any dreams, shifts, synchronicities, ah-has and write them down.
  9. MAINTAIN your altar for as long as is required; keep it fresh and vibrant; replace objects regularly; move your altar to another location (or remove it altogether) if it isn’t working for you.

Clearing Journal

As part of your process of letting go, whether you chose to create an altar or not, take a moment to reflect on the following:

  • One thing, issue, or person that I’d like to let go of today is…
  • It is safe for me to let this thing [issue, person] go because…
  • It feels really good to let this thing [issue, person] go because…
  • Just writing about letting go makes me feel…
  • One way that I will support and honor myself today [this week] for taking these steps in letting go is…
